Last week I completed the Three Peaks Challenge along with my friends, climbing the UK’s three highest mountains (Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike, and Snowdon) in just three days. It was a fantastic experience and I’d highly recommend it! But I’d also recommend making sure that you’re properly prepared and equipped for the challenge! Preparation makes all the difference!
If you’re thinking about doing the Three Peaks Challenge, here’s what I’d recommend bringing with you:
Clothing:
- Waterproof jacket and trousers
- Hat and gloves
- Layers – you’ll want to take layers off or add as the temperature changes. You’ll need a light base layer (including bottoms), middle layer and a thick, warm top layer
- Good, thick socks
- Proper hiking boots with ankle support
- Cleats or crampons for Ben Nevis (even if you don’t use them)
Equipment:
- Trekking poles (a lifesaver for steep descents, especially for bad knees)
- Sturdy hiking bag (20-30L capacity, with a rain cover)
- First aid kit
- Antiseptic wipes and hand sanitiser
- Medication – painkillers, hydration tablets
- Emergency heat blanket
- Whistle
- Small knife
- Fire starter or lighter
- Torch (in case it gets dark before you’re done)
- Map and compass
- GPS device or app
- Sunglasses and sunscreen (even if its bad weather, snow reflects sunlight and you can still burn)
- Duct tape (if you can’t fix it with duct tape, you’re not using enough duct tape!)
- Plastic bags for wet clothes and rubbish
Food and Drink:
- Plenty of water (2-3L)
- High-energy snacks like trail mix, chocolate, jerky and protein bars
- Pre-prepared sandwiches or wraps
- Emergency rations in case of emergencies
Additional Tips
- Check the Weather: Tailor your gear to the forecast for Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike, and Snowdon
- Test Your Gear: Break in boots and test your backpack’s fit
- Plan for the Dark: Prepare for sections in low visibility, especially if attempting the challenge overnight
If you’re planning to do the Three Peaks Challenge, remember to take it seriously. The mountains are stunning, but they can also be unpredictable and dangerous if you’re not prepared.
Bring the right gear, pace yourself and, most importantly, enjoy the journey!
